Data Access Guide
Did you recently complete your experiment and would like to download a copy of your experimental data? Download it now using Globus.
Getting Started with Globus
The easiest way to download your experimental data is via the Globus Web App (in a web browser).
Navigate to the Globus site (https://www.globus.org/ ) and click “Log In”
Authenticate to Globus. There are several options available -
(Preferred) Search for your Organisation in the drop-down list, select it and click “Continue”
Connect your existing Github, Google or ORCID account
Create your own https://www.globusid.org/create account and sign in from https://www.globusid.org/login
After you’ve logged in to Globus, you’ll be at the File Manager.
In addition to in-browser, Globus can also be used directly from your own laptop or personal computer with https://www.globus.org/globus-connect-personal (available for download on Windows, Mac and Linux systems).
Connect Globus to your Synchrotron Identity
This connection must be performed at least once, in order for your Australian Synchrotron Experiment Data to be provided and available through Globus.
Navigate and log in to your User Hub profile - https://userhub.synchrotron.org.au/account
If you can’t see the Data Access section on the Account Settings page, it might be that you need to refresh the page or clear the ‘cache’.
Try pressing Ctrl + F5 or open developer tools (usually with F12 on Windows/Linux or Option+Command+I on Mac), then right-click the browser's Reload button and select "Empty Cache and Hard Reload" from the context menu.
In the Details section, click the “Edit” button to begin updating your profile details.
Enter your Globus ID in the space provided under the Data Access section.
Not sure what your Globus ID is? Check out How to find my Globus ID? below
How to find my Globus ID?
To find your unique Globus account identifier (Globus ID), follow these steps:
Visit the Globus website and log in to your account.
Navigate to your Globus Account Settings.
Locate your Globus ID displayed on the Settings page.
In the Identity tab, you can view your account ID, Identity Provider and current Globus access status.
Your Globus ID is a randomly-generated, universally unique identifier (UUID) made up of a 36-character string.
Data Transfer
https://docs.globus.org/guides/tutorials/manage-files/transfer-files/
Access a Dataset
Click in the Collection field at the top to use the File Manager to search for your dataset (called a “collection” in Globus).
Helpful search terms might include:
ANSTO
ASynch
Beamline Name (e.g. IMBL)
Experiment Proposal Number (e.g. 23716a)
If you can’t see any data, you may need to connect Globus to your Synchrotron Identity.
Alternatively, you can also follow the direct link from the Data page for any Globus-accessible collections.
Click on the collection you are interested in to load the data in the File Manager.
Follow any permission prompts that appear.
Many of our beamlines allow you to download your data during the experiment. Check with your friendly beamline scientist.
Use the Path field or select icons in the panel to navigate into the directories within the Collection.
Request a Transfer
Globus is primarily set up to transfer and synchronise multiple files/folders across different collections.
This means you will need to ask your Organisation’s IT department for their existing Globus endpoint (if available) or create your own Collection on any PC or laptop with https://docs.globus.org/globus-connect-personal/
To transfer data with Globus Connect Personal on your PC or laptop, make sure the application is running and device is connected to a network with Internet access.
Click “Transfer or Sync to…” which will open a second collection panel on the right side of the page, with another Collection (search) field. Search for and select the destination Collection to download into.
Once you select the files or folders (on the left collection) that you wish to download, the “Start” button will activate.
The first time you connect to the destination Collection, you may need to accept access permissions.
Click “Start” to transfer the selected files to the destination Collection in the right panel.
Globus will display a green notification panel confirming that the transfer request was submitted.
Additional Globus Help
For more detailed information on usage, please refer to the Globus User https://docs.globus.org/guides/.
ASCI Desktop
If you are using ASCI Desktop to process your data, make sure you store the processed results in your experiment folder. Any files outside your experiment folder (for instance in your home folder) are not available for file transfer or download.
Still having trouble accessing the data?
If you're still having trouble accessing the data, please send your inquiry to as-scicomp-support@ansto.gov.au and we will respond as soon as we can.
(Legacy Guide) Data Download via SFTP
Our sftp service is set to be decommissioned and will be unavailable to use after December 2025. We encourage switching to Globus as your primary mode of data transfer well before then.
Our sftp is available on sftp.synchrotron.org.au (port 22)
The easiest way is to use a SFTP client such as WinSCP or Filezilla. Configure your client with the following settings:
Host / Server: sftp.synchrotron.org.au
Port: 22
Protocol: SFTP
Username: Your UserHub email address
Password: Your UserHub password
When you connect you will be presented with a list of folders for each experiment you have attended, grouped by beamline.
If you are familiar with the command line tool rsync, you can use it to download your data or even script the download of data. Use the same settings as above:
rsync -avz [userhub email address]@sftp.synchrotron.org.au:/data/[beamline]/[epn]
